PENDING Operating System upgrade / migration

Currently I am running a single site server with multiple distribution points.
Site server OS: 2012 R2
DPs OS: 2008 and 2012 R2
SQL 2014

I would like to upgrade to Server 2016 for my Site server.
What is the best way to go about this?
Is there a config where I can add another site server, set it to passive, once config looks ok, set that to active and switch the old server to passive (eventually decommissioning it).

Starting with SCCM CB 1806, you can add new site in the same hierarchy with active/passive mode.
You can use an in-place upgrade with SCCM or Windows 2016 media installation.
Before the upgrade, It's recommended to backup your VM/server.
