Hi everyone,

I was just curious if any other administrators using SCCM had ran into this issue. I’ve been working on it for a long time now and am not finding a solution.

In order to meet Microsoft's end of support date in January, we have been attempting an in-place upgrade of Windows 7 to Windows 10. This appears to be a problem with some Dell machines. I have a newer Dell machine and it upgraded successfully. However, it was the only one. The rest have all failed. I'm testing on a Dell Optiplex 7020 and Optiplex 790. We have over 100 machines to be upgraded.

When each machine reaches 90% during the upgrade, it throws a blue screen with the error: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED and then does a memory dump and reboots. We have ran setupDiag to determine what is causing the failure. We have eliminated the drivers that were listed as incompatible. Some reports indicated an incompatibility with Intel Display drivers. I have removed them from the machine and this is still happening.

These are the steps I have taken to resolve the issue:
1. I ran a chkdsk /x /r /f to test for any file system issues
2. I ran sfc /scannow to repair any OS issues
3. I have uninstalled all software on a test computer this is happening on. I also removed the antivirus software from it.
4. I have tried running the task sequence after a clean boot
5. I removed all hardware drivers based upon the error reports.
6. I have manually ran the Windows 10 compatibility check with no problems found

The SetupDiagResults.log file only shows an error with a memory dump during setup.
I also looked at the setupact.log and smsts.log files and found no errors that was causing the upgrade to fail.

I have examined the memory dump file and could not necessarily find anything that jumps out at me as to the issue.

If anyone would like to look at the logs and memory dump file, they are located here:

If anyone has suggestions or what has worked for them, please let me know. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Charlie

Was no setuperr.log file generated? It would be located alongside the setupact.log.

Question regarding your transition process on the whole. Was a manual upgrade performed on a representative system that completed sufficiently error-free?

Sorry for the delay in response. I've been working on this issue.

So, interesting enough, I have done further testing.

I performed a manual upgrade and it's failing as well. I'm attaching a screenshot of the error.
The error basically says: 0xC19100101 - 0x4000D
The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation.

I found this error in the error log for Configuration manager.

Also, I have now found that it works on Dell Optiplex 3040 models with no issue. However, it is still failing on Optiplex 390, 7010's, and Dell Precision T1700.

I'm going off assumption here. Since it is working perfectly on every model of 3040's and failing on the other models we have, it would appear to be a hardware/driver incompatibility. It must be something in common with the other and not included with the 3040 models. However, I can't seem to pinpoint which one. The software that is installed is in common with what is installed on the 3040 models.

If we do a clean, manual install on these models, we dont have any issues.

Sorry about missing that one before.

Charlie

I think it could be due to hardware/driver incompatibility and you can check once with Dell Support or Dell forums. From my end I will try to find answers for you.

It's out of warranty, so I wasn't sure they would do anything for me. I will contact Dell support and see.

Thank you for your help!
