Do distro points need the wsus role installed or does it just pull all the info from the primary

Sorry if I ask dumb things, I am new to sccm and learning as i go.

On 11/12/19 08:25:51, component SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER on computer reported: Site Component Manager failed to install this component on this site system.

Solution: Review the previous status messages to determine the exact reason for the failure. Site Component Manager will automatically retry the installation in minutes. To force Site Component Manager to immediately retry the installation, stop and restart Site Component Manager using the Configuration Manager Service Manager.

SMS_WSUS_CONTROL_MANAGER 4968 Site Component Manager failed to install this component, because it either can't find or configure WSUS. Possible cause: WSUS service is not installed or running. Solution: Use Add/Remove Programs to install WSUS.

than I am also getting

Process C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services\SSRS\ReportServer\bin\ReportingServicesService.exe (PID 5592, TID 6320) called the CollectSMSPerformanceData() function in SMSPERF.DLL and the function detected that the virtual memory block containing the SMS performance data was not properly initialized. No performance data will be returned to the caller. If process C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services\SSRS\ReportServer\bin\ReportingServicesService.exe is a performance monitoring application, it may display incorrect data for the SMS performance counters or no data at all.

Hi Rodney... no such thing as a dumb question. Happy to help.

Now I have a question... what component/role are you trying to install, and on what computer? You asked about Distribution Points needing WSUS. Well, no, they do not need WSUS at all, so it doesn't seem like you are trying to push the DP role out to a Site System.

If you are trying to install the Software Update Point role on a Site System, then yes, you will need WSUS in your environment and to configure the Software Update Point to synchronize with the WSUS server appropriately. This can be a bit of a head ache if you are using an existing or a downstream WSUS server, but it is possible to get working, for sure.

So, if you could say exactly what you are trying to do, that would help.

Thank you!

I am so sorry I did not go into that first, Have my main SUP with all the roles, dp,sup, man, etc like 13 roles, than I have a 4 DPs for my slow off sites.

These have like 4 roles, SUP,dp,Man, pxe, all the roles but SUP seem to be installing on them, when I add that role for the offsite it errors with for any of the offsites I try to install SUP too.

Site Component Manager failed to install this component, because it either can't find or configure WSUS. Possible cause: WSUS service is not installed or running. Solution: Use Add/Remove Programs to install WSUS.

I digged around in the logs and nothing I can see that would cause that.

I also have
SMS_REST_PROVIDER 4610 Component Status Summarizer set the status of component "SMS_REST_PROVIDER" running on computer

Which I have read is some big in updating to the new sccm.

If you have a working WSUS and SUP installation at your Primary Site, you are probably familiar with creating Deployment Packages and Software Update Groups.

Deployment Packages = The Content you will push to your DP's

Software Update Groups = The updates you will deploy to target Collections

So in your case, forget about putting the SUP role on your remote Site Systems. Just download updates at your Primary Site, push your Deployment Package to all your remote DP's, and then deploy your updates or update groups to your desired Collections. That is what the DP role is designed for. You only need 1 x SUP working with WSUS in your SCCM infrastructure for this to work.

Does that make sense?

Yeah it does, If I can not get it working right I will do that, it is not fully live yet as I am building for this compnay. Hoping to hunt down the reason why my DP can not connect back to my P1

So, 'working right' is what I have described above. Are you currently able to distribute content to your remote DP's at all?

If working right is that than why would i get that error telling me unable to install SUP on my Dp, Looks like my images and clients are getting pushed to my test DP.

Yes i just pushed a new image for windows 10 and it is making tmp file and build on the DP.

So should I just remove the SUP role form all my DP's and just leave them with migration, pxe, manag?

Yes...from what I understand about your setup, you do not need the SUP role on your DP's.

Your Primary Site Server has WSUS and SUP. SUP will bring the updates from WSUS into Configuration Manager. From Configuration Manager you can download updates, set up ADR's, create Deployment Packages, and deploy updates/update groups to ALL of your locations with a DP, and you only need WSUS and SUP working in one place.
