Dear Experts,

Please provide your expert solution for my migration process,

There was no SCCM infrastructure in place prior to joining the new company. They were curious about how this new tool works, which they had never used before, would meet their requirements, so we decided to pick a trial licence for the first few months & reported the result. The management was impressed with this software and bought a new licence.

Our current problem is that we installed server 2019 + SCCM on this Optiplex 3090 computer and set up SQL, WSUS, and 1DP on the same server.

We wanted to move this architecture from the Dell Optiplex 3090 PC to a real server in its current state, but our networking specialists did not recommend mirroring the hardware from the workstation to the server because it would lead to several conflict issues. Would you kindly share your knowledge with me and let me know the best choice for a successful migration?

Hi!!
I’m not an expert really. But I’m in the same situation more or less… I want to share my questions and ideas with the community and if I’m wrong correct me, please.
I have a physical server with 2012 R2 and sccm 2012 R2 too. We hace XP and Windows 7.
I’m thinking about clone this server in virtual environment, then do an upgrade in place.
After this I upgrade the version of sccm (don’t know what version 2103?) in another place I don’t like use the same server to all roles (SQL,WSUS etc…)
I don’t know how big is your client but .. in long term maybe you should scale this infrastructure, so I think is better have this roles separate.
My newbie opinion.
I hope másters answer you!!

Regards!

Thank you for your response.

We initially considered cloning the server from a Dell desktop device to a virtual server, but the networking team informed us that this is not a recommended option due to differences in hardware. (To be honest, I'm not sure what conflicts could occur :) )

Instead of cloning the image, what actions must be completed if the install and configuration are performed on a new virtual server?

I would be grateful if someone could provide a step-by-step guide to doing this project successfully.

Morning!

I haven't started yet. Im reading more about the issue. If anybody can throw light about this we are really grateful.
I don't know if we need do more actions or doing these steps it's ok.. With backup of SQL and Site its ok? We need do more image's or something ?
Snapshots from SQL server and site server?

Regards,
if Microsoft gave you the link, then what make you think that there are more steps? Snapshots are never supported by Microsoft.

Hi Garth,

The link given above is for upgrading the SCCM server's operating system, however we're looking for suggestions on how to move the SCCM server from a Dell Optiplex PC to a physical server.

Back up and restore is the only option. Or you can start over and migrate the apps and a like.

This is a small site with only one DP (around 300 users + 19 different location). we first faced several issues while using SCCM in our infrastructure. After 3 months efforts, everything appears to be normal and functioning properly. We do not want to interrupt the current configurations and would want to take the least risky option for this migration.

What do you think if we use the following approach?,

1. Clone the whole image from a Dell PC (Server OS, SCCM, SQL, WSUS, Reporting Service, and other dependencies).
2. Create a new server operating system using the same resources (i.e., C, D and E drives with same disk space).
3. Mirror the clone image into the new build server (Using the same server name, IP address, and DNS settings)
4. Turn OFF the existing server and TURN ON the new server.

It will not be supported, however it might work, plus your steps are in the wrong order, #4 need to move to #2, as you can't have two computers with the same name on at the same time. The least risky option would be to create clean server with new site code and keep both up and running. Slow migrating details from one to the other.

Do we need to purchase additional SCCM and SQL licences if we want to create another site code in new server?

Thank you for taking the time to give this information.
Let me try to look over the entire link and get back to you with any questions or findings.
