Hello,

some names within SCCM I have just translated from German. But you will know where I am within SCCM.

We want to do a normal SCCM console update to 2010. Nothing special.
In Administration, Overview, Updates and Servicing "Configuration Manager 2010" appears with state: Ready to install.
I mark it and click show status in the lower half of the pane.
This opens "monitoring, Overview, Update- and servicing status --> and here it does show "Configuration Manager 2010"
So far so good.

Now back to Administration, Overview, Updates and servicing.
Here I right click Configuration Manager 2010 and click install update package.
The state in this window changes rightfully to "being installed".
However, when I now click show status in the lower half of the pane, it opens again "monitoring, Overview, Update- and servicing status" - but this pane now is empty.
Configuration Manager 2010 got removed from this pane and won't show up any longer.
Now I checked the logfile cmupdate.log. There it says:
There is no pending update package to be processed. // ok, there is not because it was taken out by the system. But why???
INFO: SQL Connection succeeded. Connection: SMS ACCESS, Type: Secure
Waiting for changes to the ...inboxes\cmupdate.box" directories, updates will be polled in 600 seconds.
This repeats without end.

So: I can start the update. Then, in administration, Updates and Servicing it says "being installed".
But it actually never arrives in monitoring. So it did not REALLY start.
I went to SQL Server, deleted the update from cm_updatepackages // where PackageGuid='our-configuration-manager-2010-guid'
Checked for updates, found it, downloaded it again. Now I can start all over but to no avail.

Would anybody have an idea what is going on here?

Thank you

Why did you delete the package from the DB ? When I trigger the install update, I simply leave the server idle and wait for the installation to complete. Now the best way to monitor the update install progress is review cmupdate.log. You know that Microsoft doesn't support modifying database and deleting the package from DB could trigger other issues.

Hello,
no, you did not understand correctly.
We started the update and waited. The only thing that happened was that the entry for Configuration Manager 2010 disappeared in Monitoring? At the point where it disappeared we had done nothing to the database.
Only after checking cm_update.log we realized that the system said "There is no pending update packaged to be processed". It waited 10 minutes and polled again with the same result. The update just did not continue that is it did not start correctly.
After some polling cycles we had to remove it from the database because otherwise you cannot start the update again. It is just in an undefined state where everything is greyed out and no further action can be triggered. Only after realizing this we interfered on the cm_Update table. That brought everything back to normal. We could download the 2010 update again, etc.
The funny part is: why did it disappear from monitoring and why did it poll every 10 minutes without finding any update to process?
Or is it normal for the update to disappear in between and after 30 minutes or so it magically re-appears?
Thank you though for looking into this and for your reply.
Sincerely
AndreasM

I am really not sure on this one. Maybe I can simulate this in my lab and test it later.

I have the exact same issue going on. it says its installing, but none of the logs show it doing anything and the show status from Updates and Servicing is blank.
