I'm trying to figure out why I can't manually run Windows Update on a Windows Server 2016 that has a GPO pointed to my SCCM server CB. When I run Windows Update, I get an Update Status, "Your device is up to date. Last checked: Today's date". I manually ran the Windows Update last Wednesday, 01/13. Checking SCCM Software Update, I can see that there are Updates for Windows Server 2016 and Required. But, letting SCCM handle the update push, I can see that the updates were installed this morning - per scheduled on Windows Maintenance.

Am I not able to manually run Windows Update and receive them from SCCM like I would when the GPO were pointed to the WSUS server?

What if you trigger the Software Update deployment cycle from the ConfigMgr client under Control Panel?

I've tried it and gave it an hour or and tried running the Windows Update once more. It again said that the system was up-to-date.

Did you install and configure the Software Update point? Boundary groups?

What is the status of the deployment under Monitoring > Deployments?

What about the following log files?
  • UpdatesStore.log
  • UpdatesDeployment.log
  • WUAHandler.log
You will find in under "%WINDIR%\CCM\Logs".

Did you install and configure the Software Update point? Boundary groups? - Yes to Software Update and to Boundary groups.

What is the status of the deployment under Monitoring > Deployments? - It's a new Virtual Machine and have just recently added it to a collection group. I have not deployed deployed the patches yet to the collection group, where the new VM is a member of.

What about the following log files?
- The new VM doesn't have much information on the UpdatesDeployment.log, UpdateStore.log and WUAHandler.log.

The other Windows servers on the same device collection group can't get any new Updates as well. Note: I've recently, for this month, pointed the the GPO from a WSUS server to SCCM server with the WSUS.

Is this why? I can deploy Windows Updates to my experimental device collection. Though I'll open a new thread on this, got some questions about it.

Is it because I have not deployed my new January Updates package to the device collection that there are no New Updates to be collected when I manually run Windows Updates on the Windows Servers?

Check the LocationServices.log file to make sure that your SUP is correctly configured in the client side.

If you have any further software update deployment issue, start the troubleshoot from the Monitoring node then the client SU logs.
