Hi Guys

What im looking to do is upgrade our production environment that stands at 1 CAS and 2 Primaries with 5 DP's with SCCM 2012R2 they are all on Server 2008R2 with SQL 2008 . I was wondering if I can just back up the Site Maintenance as well as the 2008 DB then spin up Server 2016 install SCCM 2012R2 restore the DB and recover the site from backup. Then just do a in place upgrade to current branch. When I recover the site I will only recover the one Primary I don't see the need for the CAS and 2 Primaries as we only have 6 thousand clients or so.. Im not sure what comes next after that.. Thank you for your time

A CAS is not required when you have just 6k clients. Assuming your company grows and max client count could reach to 15k, you still don't need CAS unless you have 100K computers. Instead of using site maintenance, restoring DB and then performing upgrade, you could setup a new SCCM in parallel to existing one with a new site code and then migrate all the resources from old to new. You also get rid of upgrade issues which are most difficult to troubleshoot.

If not you can proceed with your method that you mentioned and that also works fine.
