NEW Failed to download PXE variable file. exit code 14

I am trying to build a win 10 desktop in vmware. The vm boots successfully into PXE and loads the winpe wim file. once this has loaded it attempts to start the process then stops. press F8 and open cmtrace for the smsts.log file i see the following entries. see attached screenshot. i've searched for the exit code and error code and they indicate it could be a driver issue. would this apply for the vmware nic. The adapter type is vmxnet 3 with direct path i/o enabled.

did you add the vmware network drivers to your boot image. if not just mount the vmware tools and get the NIC driver then add it to your boot image
 
I dont think the drivers are in the image. i'll have a look at the vmware tools files for the drivers. Thanks
