Over the weekend the Tempdb files have doubled in size and as a result that the drive is full now.
How do I fix this? Shrink the Temp Database? Before I shrink the size I want to understand why this would happen and what's the best practice to keep it at normal size.
Yes you should shrink it and maybe even back it up.
Why it happens? This is be almost impossible to answer after the fact but generally a long running query, a poorly written query to many update happening.
As a general rule your temp db should be 20% of all of your dbs.
