How many times did you try to get an SCCM lab started?

There are lots of excellent guides out there to get an SCCM lab started. But sometimes I feel like some steps or extra details are left out. I end up pouring over all the different blogs, howto's, etc. only to find out I'm missing something. I really want to learn SCCM from the ground up. I guess it's going to take a lot of trial and error.

It's mostly for example, when adding features to the server like DotNet 3.5. Some guides say check everything under that option, others only say to check a couple settings. Same for IIS web server. I decided to check everything under the main heading for each feature just to be safe. Also, I started using Hasleo System Backup to create checkpoints along the way. For example, creating a system back up after installing AD and setting up the domain. Then another backup after extending schema, adding features, prereqs and ADKs. This way if something goes wrong during the config manager install, I can go back to a previous state. I'm trying to be more methodical and really looking to understand SCCM/MECM from the ground up. Your guides and others are really good. It's just me that needs to slow down a bit and understand what I'm doing.

Check points are not supported to be used by ConfigMgr. So if you actually restored from them at any point in the past, bad things can happen. You should never use a check point on a dc, particularly if it has the fsmo roles on it.

Yes, it's normal to run into gaps. Since SCCM has many moving parts, trial and error ultimately plays an important role in learning it.
