Hi Prajwal,

I have followed the steps you have mentioned in your page "http://prajwaldesai.com/installing-and-configuring-windows-deployment-services/" but I am not sure if I have configured it right.

My Lab Setup :
I have a windows 7 pc on which I used VM ware and 2 virtual machines both having Windows 2008 R2.
first machine I made it a domain controller for which I used this procedure shared in the link: "http://www.windowsnetworking.com/ar...ing-Creating-Lab-Domain-Controller-Part1.html"

can you please say can this be used. if not can u share the procedure.

on the second virtual machine I have Windows Server 2008 R2 and configured Windows Deployment Services by adding the rule in Server manager.

In Windows Deployment Services configure Server on clicking the same I do not see any Server displayed here.

Can you please help me with this.
if you share the method you used for Configuring domain controller will be most useful.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Prajwal,

After installing WDS on the second virtual machine and navigating to WDS in server manager to configure the server I do not see any server to be configured.

Like I said I have followed the procedure mentioned in this link http://www.windowsnetworking.com/ar...ing-Creating-Lab-Domain-Controller-Part1.html" to create the Domain controller, which I think I am missing a few steps for this to happen.

please see the snapshot, the selected portion there are no Servers that are to be configured.
Can you tell me the steps on how a server can be made visible here.

Hi Prajwal,

You want me to add the steps/screenshots which i used to create the Domain controller and then configure the DHCP server.

Hi Prajwal,

I got over the issue and was able to see the server on my pc where WDS is installed.
But when i try configuring the WDS Server i see an issue like " The Service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
I googled this and some say to use this " wdsutil /set-Server /UseDhcpPorts:No" i tried this still no luck ,once i click back on pending devices i see the same issue.

when i click on Drivers it says " The Windows Deployment Services driver server is unavailable."

i tried couple of times removing the role and i see the same issue again.

can you please help on this.

Thanks,
Balaji S D

Hi Prajwal,

I tried installing WDS on the PC(not a Virtual Machine) where i have AD DS, DNS server and DHCP server installed and observed that while configuring the server i did not see any issues like i mentioned above.

i did not still understand what might have caused this issues on the PC running only WDS.

please share your thoughts on this.

Thanks,
Balaji S D

Hi Prajwal,

After the Boot Image and Install image are added into the WDS server, i started the VM without an os and tried to boot from the network (VM ware is running on the same machine where WDS role is added) i see an issue like PXE-E53 no boot file name received PXE MOF Exiting Intel PXE ROM.

i googled it and tried a few steps but no luck.

please share your thoughts on this.

Thanks,
Balaji S D.

Did you check the event viewer for error details ?

Check the network configuration of the second VM for which you are booting with PXE, check if the network adapter is correctly assigned.

Hi Prajwal,

I did not understand what is that you meant to check if the network adapter is correctly assigned. Can you please tell me what is that i should check.( sorry for asking , i am not clear about what to check).

When i see this error (PXE-E53 no boot file name received PXE MOF Exiting Intel PXE ROM) on the PC where i have WDS server installed , WDS is stopped and i am never able to start it again.(tried many times no luck)

When i go into the role and press start it shows the error "An error occurred while trying to start the windows deployment services server. Error Information : 0xc1030136".
Event ID :257.

Is this because ot this (WDS server stopped) am i seeing the error no boot file name received.(just a hunch)

Please share your views on this.

Also,
One more thing i never understood was, for a VM how DHCP works, say my AD DS gives me ip for physical machines connected in that Domain. When i open a VM and connect it to the domain, should my VM have the ip which my Domain gives or it has its own ip (192.168....).
i did not get a clear understanding so posted this.

Hi Prajwal,

i re-did the whole config again today
1. Took two physical PC's.
2. On the first PC installed the roles of AD DS,DNS, DHCP Server.
3. On the second PC installed WDS and File Services.
4. Open the role WDS on second pc click on server and observed my first pc Domain Server there which is ready for config.

I did not see the issue again. I will try to undo all the things see again if the issue comes.

Thanks,
Balaji S D.

Hi Prajwal,

I am still not able to boot thorugh PXE.

My only success case was, On a pc where i installed roles of AD DS, DNS Server, DHCP, File services and WDS , I configured the WDS server.

On an other PC, where I had windows server 2008 R2 connected to the same domain, with tftp client feature enabled when I reboot and press F12, I am able to boot from network.

On this PC after I reboot, on the boot settings screen it takes GUID MAC and stops for user input to press F12.

But on the other PC which had Win 7 on it and in same domain as the second PC(having win server 2008 r2 with no roles added) it never worked. After reboot it directly goes to network boot it directly goes and checks GUID MAC and displays no boot file found.

I added the role of tftp client on both the PC's.

I am still not clear as how one PC in the network(same domain) is able to boot while other cannot.

Does network boot has a dependency on OS running on the machine.

Please help me on this.

Thanks,
Balaji S D.

What i think is the PC is not able to communicate to the WDS server. Do you see the DHCP server IP on the boot screen of the PC ?

Hi Prajwal,

On my VM the ip was 192.x.x.x but the ip from my DHCP server starts with 10.20. x.x.
When i changed my VM settings Network Adapter settings to Bridged (Automatic) the ip has changed to 10.20.x.x series which was given by my DHCP server.
After which when i checked the network boot by pressing F12, i was able to deploy Win 7 to my VM.

Thanks a lot for your help.
Keep up the good work.

Regatds,
Balaji S D.
