PENDING Service stack updates

Hi guys

I am now supporting windows 10 virtual machines that haven’t been backed up in months so I need to start patching them I know you need SSU installed to install culminated updates my question is can I just use the most recent ssu or do I need whatever came out side patching was last applied?

If the SCCM client is installed on these VMs, you can create a new device collection and deploy the software updates to it.

Yes I can deploy office updates just fine but it never sees the CU updates comes back as compliant even though it’s not . From what I read it’s missing SSU updates that’s why so im
Not sure if I need to install just the most current SSU or all SSU from when the VM was last patched
