PENDING General Question regarding pre-cache/pre-download

When deploying a software update as pre-cache/pre-download, when is this process initiated to pre-download said update. I have the update set as required. I couldn't find much documentation on what kicks off the pre-cache, and when the expected files will be found in CCMCACHE.
