Dear Prajwal,

Greetings.

We recently upgraded SCCM to version 1810. All the DPs are upgraded successfully except 2 DPs and both fails with the same error "Failed to configure MSXML 6.0 on DP xxxxxxxx, ErrorCode - 8, Hresult - 0x0"

All files are getting copied to sms_dp$ folder but logs are not getting created under sms_dp$\sms\logs folder. Also remoteinstall folder is missing.

Attached the distmgr.log. Please check and help me to sort out this issue.

Regards,
Sreedhar K

Do you have the updated distmgr.log file ?. I don't see any error other than Failed to configure MSXML 6.0 on DP.

I am now having this same issue with a DP. The logs show this line:
Failed to configure MSXML 6.0 on DP MYDP.DOMAIN.COM, ErrorCode - 8, Hresult - 0x0 SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGER 5/3/2020 11:52:25 AM 11248 (0x2BF0)

then the next line is:
Will try again after 20 minutes ... SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGER 5/3/2020 11:52:25 AM 11248 (0x2BF0)

I've attempted to remove the role, and remove it as site system, clean up IIS, DP registry, file system etc, and re-add but keep getting this.

MSXML 6.0 is already part of Windows installation... so I'm not sure if this is just a red herring in the log? When I run that MSI manually from the DP folder, (msxml6_x64.msi) it says it's installed.

Needing some help on this :)

Out of curiosity what is the ConfigMgr version and what is the server OS on which you are installing the DP role.

Hi Prajwal,

ConfigMgr version is 1906, and attempting to install to Server 2016 Standard. We have many other 2016 DP's, so this one's a bit of a mystery. Nothing else on that server seems to be problematic. Other installs locally on that server like, MSI based, etc, are all working normally. So, not sure what its trying to "configure" here that fails. Right after it fails in the distmgr.log, it says will retry in 20 minutes. And yes, it repeats all day this way.

The log file attached by poster isn't helping me much to determine why this issue is causing. Can you try the below steps.
1. Uninstall the DP role from that 2016 server and restart the server.
2. Before installing DP role, run the powershell command provided here - https://www.prajwaldesai.com/install-iis-base-components-on-sccm-distribution-point/
3. Install the DP role and let me know if that installs DP role.

I will be able to retry tomorrow and let you know.

We have figured out what was causing the ErrorCode 8 in our environment. In our environment, we limit the Security Privileges in a GPO for "Back up files and directories" and "Restore Files and Directories".

Our Primary Site server IS added to admin on DP's, however without those two privileges, remote WMI process creation fails with UNKNOWN Error 8.

It can't start the MSXML 6 setup on command line, nor the IIS setup using DISM, nor setup of BranchCache, etc. It may not seem intuitive as to why those privileges are needed, however remote WMI process creation needs to load the user profile (ntuser.dat), and that cannot happen without SeBackupPrivilege and SeRestorePrivilege.

I added back those two privileges for site server computer account, and the issue is now gone.
