NEW DP Running Low on Disk Space

I read a previous article posted on this site for a DP with low disk space and the recommendation was to move the content (Move DP Content using Content Library Transfer Tool) but was curious if a drive was added prior to running out of space, wouldn't the new drive handle the additional content if the NO_SMS_ON_DRIVE.sms file is not present on the new drive? We're trying to be pro-active on this and have time, just don't want to go through extra effort if adding space is all that is needed.
