I've spent months testing different avenues and came to a someone solid conclusion save for a few minor issues. Ultimately, I can't use the Software Update Agent as we have another platform to deploy Windows updates, in general. For feature updates we are looking to use SCCM so I created an OS Upgrade Package to deploy using a task sequence. I was able to finagle it so that the initial reboot delay is 48 hours and then the subsequent reboot delay during the several reboots during the update is only 30 second; that was a huge win! One thing I'm testing now is if a user shuts down their machine while the first portion, the downloading of content and first steps, is running. From what I can tell, it doesn't seem like the TS tries again, even though I have 'Always rerun' set.

Ultimately, my plan was to create a collection and query members based on older versions of Windows, 2004 and older for the moment, and then have the TS deployed to this collection only while also having a maximum OS readiness check set to 2004. This should act as a double check on running the TS if the machine is already up to date. My biggest snag at the moment is figuring out what to do with machines where users reboot/shutdown during the TS and how to get it to run again after. I've also tried creating a second deployment to no avail.

Does anyone have any ideas or best practices of how to deploy these Windows Feature Updates? Or what I might be able to try or look at to get it to run against a machine that only had a portion of it succeed before being shut down?
